First Execution Performed with Nitrogen Gas in Alabama
The state of Alabama implemented a new form of prisoner execution utilizing nitrogen hypoxia. The procedure included a mask forcing the prisoner to breathe pure nitrogen which leads to the human body shutting down.
The European Union had protested the form of capital punishment as “a particularly cruel and unusual punishment” which was illustrated when the prisoner, Kenneth Smith, took 25 minutes to die and violently thrashed in pain as the hypoxia set in.
